Stephen Neville

Professor Neville is a Registered Nurse and Gerontological Researcher with extensive experience in nursing education and research. In 2026, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for contributions to gerontology research and seniors. Before joining the University of the Sunshine Coast, he held several senior academic and research leadership roles in New Zealand.

As Professor and Head of Discipline – Nursing at the University of the Sunshine Coast, he is dedicated to advancing the health and wellbeing of communities through strategic leadership, impactful research, and ensuring nursing graduates are well-equipped to deliver high-quality, person-centred care. His work is embedded in the principles of equity, inclusivity, and meaningful engagement with key stakeholders. He is committed to mentoring the next generation of nurses by fostering learning environments that prioritise culturally safe practice, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and compassion.

Professor Neville is an active member of the University of the Sunshine Coast's Healthy Ageing Cluster. His research focuses on gerontology, particularly ensuring communities are safe and supportive environments for older adults. His work also addresses ageism, stigma, and discrimination, social isolation, and cognitive health in ageing populations. Over the years, he has successfully secured research grants, leading to a significant number of publications and conference presentations. His current research, "Modified Pathways to Sustainable Ageing in Aotearoa," aims to reduce frailty in older populations and promote sustainable, healthy ageing.

He is a Fellow and Life Member of the College of Nurses Aotearoa (NZ), an Adjunct Professor at the University of Auckland and a Research Associate with the AUT Centre for Active Ageing in New Zealand. His editorial contributions include serving as Editor for the Journal of Clinical Nursing and Associate Editor for the Australasian Journal on Ageing. He is also a member of the Age-friendly Advisory Board for the Office for Seniors, Ministry of Social Development in New Zealand, as well as the Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery (Australia & New Zealand) Research Advisory Committee.

Driven by a commitment to social justice and health equity, Professor Neville continuously strives to create meaningful impact through his research and leadership. He believes in the power of collaboration and inclusivity to drive positive change. His ongoing mission is to mentor the next generation of nurses and gerontological researchers, enhance health and wellbeing outcomes for older populations, and contribute to a more just and equitable society.
