When complimented by effective interpretation, experiential wildlife tourism has been identified as a pathway to potentially transform tourists’ environmental knowledge and attitudes. However, such powerful engagement capacity is often diluted post-experience and the opportunity for its translation to behavioural change is lost. Utilising non-traditional forms of conservation-related messaging has the capacity to broaden the conservation potential of wildlife tourism by extending learning and prompting behavioural change. This paper explores the power of long-form nonfiction narratives to extend the learning from on-site interpretation and broaden conservation engagement. It is illustrated by the case study of collaboration between Dr Wong Siew Te, founder and Director of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, and Dr Sarah Pye’s author of nonfiction narratives based on Dr Wong’s experiences.

This chapter is a post-project reflection which explores the challenges I faced in researching and crafting a non-fiction biography of Malaysian ecologist Dr Wong Siew Te in relation to the inclusion speculative life stories of sun bears in his care. It compares my use of anthropomorphic empathic speculation to imagine the experiences of individual bears with the fictional biographical speculation of non-human animals in two seminal works, Virginia Woolf’s biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Flush, and Barbara Gowdy’s The White Bone . It concludes that species-inclusive narratives are important, since if we fail to address the disconnect between humans and natural systems, unsustainable human behaviour has the capacity to lead to our own eventual demise.

This report details a research project that was instigated to provide a clearer picture for the Tourism and Major Events Unit (TMEU) of Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) about the local events industry supply chain. Key aims of the project were to compare the local industry to that of other similar Australian regions and to identify issues or gaps within the supply chain. Data were collected from a range of secondary sources and a series of focus group and depth interviews with practitioners from within the local events industry. In broad terms, the events industry is comprised of several subcategories or types of event based on purpose, content and participants (e.g. sports, cultural, business and private events). Yet, all these categories are linked through basic operational needs provided by the supply chain and form a dynamic commercial ecosystem. Hence, there was a need to investigate the perspectives of operators from each subcategory to provide a collective context for findings.

The traditional role of biographer as 'silent witness' has been replaced by a spectrum of subjective authorial points of view which include that of omniscient narrator and authorial fictional character. This essay argues that the lesser discussed perspective of 'interpreter' is more effective in scientific and conservation biographies which aim to elicit environmental engagement from the reader. It uses the interdisciplinary scholarship of environmental interpretation, which 'involves translating the technical language of a natural science or related field into terms and ideas that people who aren't scientists can readily understand' [Ham. 1992. Environmental Interpretation: A Practical Guide for People with big Ideas and Small Budgets. Golden, CO: North American Press, 3] and examples from my own research into the life of Malaysian ecologist Dr Wong Siew Te to explore this perspective.

In this project I use practice-led research to construct a historiographic biography of Malaysian biologist and tropical ecologist, Dr Wong Siew Te in order to explore the potential of long-form nonfiction as a communication tool for the dissemination of conservation science. Telling the life story of a non-Western scientist working in his own country offers me the opportunity to delve into cultural discourse around conservation, while using interdisciplinary environmental interpretation scholarship to inform my subjective positioning within the narrative. While incorporating the histories of individual Malayan sun bears (Helarctos Malayanus) to illustrate issues such as habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching and the illegal pet trade, I seek to avoid anthropomorphism and instead to give voice to the ‘world’s forgotten bear’ through informed speculation. Using an ethically collaborative approach, I aim to present science in a way that is accessible to a non-specialist audience and potentially evoke the necessary environmental stewardship outside of scientific circles.

Without significant adaptation and response to climate change and environmental destruction, human behaviour has the capacity to lead to our eventual demise. However, in our fast-paced media world, conservation messages and warnings are often ignored by the public, politicians and commercial concerns. This article proposes that long-form nonfiction narratives are an important communication tool for the dissemination of conservation science in the Anthropocene. Furthermore, it suggests that future-focused nature biographies have the capacity to present science in a way that is accessible to a non-specialist audience, evoking the necessary responsibilities and stewardship outside of scientific circles. This article compares biographical exemplars with the author's practice-led research exploring the life of Malaysian biologist and tropical ecologist, Dr Wong Siew Te.

It is becoming more important for higher education to ensure graduates are able to handle real world challenges and provide immediate value for potential employers. In many disciplines this requires blending theory with practice and traditional communications method with digital ones. USC offers several ways for students to engage with industry or non-profit organisations to further their skills. Kolb (1984) calls this Experiential Learning which is defined as "A holistic integrative perspective on learning that combines experience, perception, cognition and behaviour." Experiential learning is blended learning, but not necessarily in a digital sense. Instead it blends theory and practice and it comes from the assumption that ideas and knowledge are not fixed, but formed and reformed through experience. Whether internships or special projects, successful experiential learning opportunities require a learning-centred approach (Hunt and Chalmers 2012) and an awareness of industry relevance. At USC, courses like BUS 302 and 2IP1 have been created to allow course design flexibility. The 2013 Cambodia Mekong River Expedition, led by Dr Gayle Mayes, and the upcoming Bornean Sun Bear Launch project in February 2014 (funded by DIICCSRTE and supported by USC GO) will be used to illustrate the challenges, possibilities and wide-reaching outcomes of blending theory, practice and digital communication effectively. They will illustrate how blended learning can make a difference on a world stage, at the same time as meeting graduate attributes and providing value to future employers.
