Biography
Dr Michelle Maugham-Macan joined the School of Health and Behavioural Science at UniSC as a Lecturer in Biomedical Science in February 2020. Prior to joining UniSC, Michelle worked as an Associate Lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology and Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Prostate Cancer Research - Queensland, Queensland University of Technology (2018-2020) investigating novel therapeutics that target metabolic syndrome and advanced prostate cancer. Michelle's long standing research interest has been in bone biology and her research now focuses on the health of people with Down syndrome specifically investigating bone health in people with Down syndrome.
Michelle is an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS) and the Trisomy 21 Research Society (T21RS) Science and Society Committee and Preclinical Research Committee. Michelle is also an Associate Editor for the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research.
Research
Michelle’s research focus is bone biology and the health of people with Down syndrome; specifically investigating the aetiology of early-onset osteoporosis in Down Syndrome. Her preclinical and clinical expertise includes in vitro cell culture assays, small animal models, histology and bone imaging techniques.
Current Honours and HDR projects:
1. Investigating the aetiology of early-onset osteoporosis in Trisomy 21.
