Maddison Cross is a PhD candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), specialising in the biology and ecology of scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) in Queensland, Australia. Her research aims to enhance our understanding of this critically endangered species by examining key aspects of its life history, including habitat use, movement patterns, age and growth, and post-release mortality. To achieve this, Maddison employs a range of innovative methods, including drones, acoustic telemetry, laboratory analyses, and fishery-based data.

In addition to doctoral research, Maddison serves as a technical officer for the Queensland SharkSmart drone trial team, where she uses drone footage to investigate the space use and movement patterns of sharks along Queensland's coastal beaches. Through this dual role, Maddison is contributing to both fundamental scientific research and applied conservation efforts aimed at protecting shark populations in the region.
