About
Dr Zidi Yan is a Research Fellow specialising in timber structural engineering, durability and prefabricated construction. His research focuses on improving the performance and adaptability of timber buildings, with an emphasis on practical solutions for the Australian construction industry.
Zidi completed his PhD at the University of Queensland in 2024, where he developed and prototyped a panelised light timber-framed building system for adaptable housing. His work on reversible connections supports the assembly, disassembly and reuse of building components, allowing homes to respond to changing household needs. This research contributes to circular construction by exploring how timber buildings can be reconfigured and their components retained for future use.
His durability research investigates how moisture, preservative treatments and environmental exposure affect timber connections and metal fasteners. He combines laboratory testing, field exposure and structural modelling to examine changes in connection strength and long-term performance. He also develops AI-assisted methods for assessing preservative penetration in timber, helping improve measurement consistency and support quality control.
Zidi works with researchers, engineers and industry partners to address challenges in timber design, manufacturing and construction. His research provides evidence to inform material selection and connection design, helping manufacturers and engineers make informed decisions about timber products and their use. His broader aim is to extend the useful life of timber resources and support housing that can be maintained, adapted and reused.
