About
Biography
Dr Shannon Brincat is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of the Sunshine Coast. His research focuses on critical international relations theory, climate change adaptation, dialectics, recognition, and the imagination in the context of global politics. He also focuses on applied environmental politics in Mozambique, India, PNG, Fiji and Timor-Leste. He has published 10 volumes and over 50 papers in international journals and books and his most recent manuscript Dialectical Dialogues in Global International Relations is forthcoming in the Voices in IR Series at Oxford University Press. He is also a co-editor of Global Discourse.
Shannon's work focuses on processes of global transformation taking place over and above the state. In particular, he has examined how people have sought to expand the circle of inclusion in cosmopolitan political community through processes of mutual recognition and dialogue across borders in world politics. Other research areas include global responses to climate change and ecological crises, especially how class impacts adaptation at the local level.
He has a particular interest in ‘worlding’ philosophy and IR , focusing on dialectics and imagination, Indigenous knowledges and Buddhist ontologies, and is a representative of the Global IR section of the ISA. With Stepanka Zemanova, he is writing the first textbook in this area.
His major project over the last decade focuses on dialectics – a unique form of thinking through questions that are infdoubt through dialogue with others – and how different cultures and societies have utilised such knowledge across history. His book, The Spiral World, shows how dialectical thinking can help us mediate the accelerating ecological and political challenges facing humanity today.
In addition, Shannon is International Liaison with the Departamento das Relações Internacionais Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Políticas Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) in Timor-Leste. He has also partnered with the Ministry for Rural Development and Public Housing, and, the Director for National Innovation and and Capacity Building for the project 'Building Capacity & Good Governance for Community-Organisations in Timor-Leste'.
Since completing his PhD in 2011, Shannon has been a Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Queensland, and a Research Fellow at Griffith University. Shannon's articles have appeared in journals such as the European Journal of International Relations, International Studies Quarterly, Review of International Studies, and Constellations. He sits on the editorial board of Globalizations, Frontiers in Environmental Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (Springer Nature) (amongst others). Shannon also helped found and sits on the board of the Queensland School of Continental Philosophy (QSCP).
Shannon is also a regular media contributor, featuring on BBC Global, ABC National, Pacific- wide radio shows and with over 20 op-ed pieces in The Conversation, Australian Institute of International Affairs, and many others.
