Biography
My research focus is on improving the way we assess physical function and clinical outcomes. This has had worldwide impact, with many of my software programs and hardware designs made freely available to researchers and clinicians throughout the world.
Highlights from my skills and experience include:
- The most read and 3rd most cited researcher in the world in the journal field "Rehabilitation" for the decade 2010-2019 (SCIVAL Trends)
- >200 published journal articles, including 2 in the top 0.1% for citations in their year of publication. In SCOPUS, 7 of my first and 3 of my senior author papers have been cited >100 times (total = 12 with >100 citations)
- My site www.rehabtools.org sharing software and hardware designs has >15,000 site visits per annum.
- 2014 International Society for Posture and Gait Research Promising Young Scientist Award Winner.
- Supervised >18 PhD and Research Masters students to completion, including surgeons, physiotherapists and exercise scientists. Many of these have obtained National Health and Medical Research (NHMRC) Australia or National Institute of Health (NIH) scholarships funding their work.
- >$25 million in research funding from external sources as a Chief or Principal Investigator, including a National Health and Medical Research (NHMRC) Council Career Development Fellowship (RD Wright Biomedical), four NHMRC Project grants, and other competitive grants internationally.
- Post-Doctoral Fellowship at University of Melbourne (2008-2013).
- Developed systems used in hospitals throughout Australia and the world, including Singapore General Hospital, University of Rochester Medical Center and Cincinnati Children's Hospital. These systems are used for teaching and research in >100 universities globally.
- Worked with a range of clinical populations such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, joint surgery, cancer, emphysema, Parkinson’s disease and children born very pre-term.
- Most importantly - my former students and Post-docs have gone on to do great things, including obtaining their own NHMRC Fellowships, national level Presidents of clinical bodies, and internationally recognised leaders in their fields.
