Prior to leaving USC he was the Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Human Services and the Diploma of Social and Human Services. As part of his Adjunct role Phil continues to be involved with USC in various projects. Phil's academic interests centre on human services and social work practice, particularly in respect of vulnerable young people, and social issues typified by complexity. His research and project leadership has been influential in the areas of early intervention into youth homelessness, the use of participatory action research as a tool for creating contextually responsive services and service systems, youth alcohol and other drug practice, public space practice, and support for young people leaving care. He has a particular interest in person-centered context responsive practice, and appreciating the importance of a relational lens for practitioners working with young people.

He has active links with a wide range of service sectors most notably the homelessness and housing, and youth sectors. He is lead author of numerous practice guides for youth drug and alcohol practice and participatory action research in human services.

Phil undertakes practice-orientated research into the prevention of homelessness through various initiatives. Whilst at QUT Phil co-led a multi-disciplinary partnership between a university and the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg.
