A sociolinguist by training, Nick's main research focuses on the way in which language is used within organisations, particluarly sports teams. His research to date has investigated leadership development, the construction of team identity in sports teams, and the negotiation of local politeness norms and power within a hierarchy. In collaboration with his former PhD students, he has also carried out research on Taboo Language and Language Learning. Nick has published widely in the area of sociopragmatics and leadership discourse, and is recognised as a core researcher in the area of sports linguistics.

Nick has co-authored two academic textbooks: An Introduction to Sociolinguistics, with Janet Holmes, and Academic Success: A student's guide to studying at university, with Jean Brick, Deanna Wong and Maria Herke.
