About

Dr Matt Mason is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing and an infection prevention and control (IPC) specialist at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He is an undergraduate nursing program coordinator and a core researcher with the Australian Centre for Pacific Islands Research.

Matt has worked in IPC since 2006 and has engaged directly with Papua New Guinea since 2010, building close partnerships across the health sector. His research and teaching focus on strengthening health services in resource-constrained settings to enable safe, accessible care for communities and health workers alike. His areas of expertise include infection prevention and control, vascular access, infectious diseases, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, gender-based violence, and the use of pop culture pedagogy in health education.

Matt has built a strong network across the Western Pacific. He is a technical adviser to the WHO Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network and a board director of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control. He also serves as an executive member and IPC lead of the Pacific Region Infectious Disease Association, and as co-director of the Collaborative for the Advancement of Infection Prevention and Control.

Since late 2025, Matt has served as a technical lead for the Community Health Worker Stream of the Women's Empowerment Platform, a collaborative initiative between the University of the Sunshine Coast and the University of New South Wales's IS4SSR team. The platform strengthens community health responses and supports women's safety across Papua New Guinea.

These roles reflect his commitment to mentorship and long-term capacity building across some of the region's most under-resourced health systems.
