Biography

Leanda Garvie joined the School of Business at the University of the Sunshine Coast in February 2017.

Following an early career in science in fields as diverse as natural resource management, horticulture research and molecular biology, Leanda gained qualifications and pursued a career in accounting. As an accountant, Leanda has worked for a range of small, medium and large businesses including a multinational company in the horticulture research and production industry. Leanda has also supported the development of countless digital resources as an educational consultant for national and international digital resource providers. In accounting, she has contributed to resources and authorship of textbooks from leading publishers Wiley and Pearson.

Leanda's interdisciplinary PhD was a collaboration with UniSC's Forest Research Institute, where she explored the potential for forest residues to contribute to Australia's bioeconomy identifying potential benefits like waste management, additional revenue streams, carbon mitigation and other circular economy linkages. She now supports HDR students in their research journeys. Leanda looks forward to applying her background in accounting and business to solving real-world problems associated with forest wood products, carbon accounting, climate change strategies, and the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy. She is engaged in an IEA Bioenergy Task 43 funded project investigating social and economic drivers and benefits of bioenergy and has published alongside leading national and international researchers in forest carbon, biofuels, and the bioeconomy.

Leanda continues to work alongside here SBCI accounting and business colleagues, teaching and course coordinating accounting and business courses. She is engaged in many research projects with colleagues including as a co-investigator of a research project with $120,000 HERDC funding to investigate small business financial resilience. Other projects include public sector sustainability reporting, regional airline reporting and accountability, corporate reporting, environmental management strategies, and Australian taxation hesitancy, compliance and policy.

Leanda especially enjoys witnessing the growth and development of undergraduate students as they progress through their studies and is proud of the contribution she makes to their futures.
