What is known about the role of aquatic foods within the Pacific school food environments – A scoping study

Abstract
Objective: This scoping study aims to identify and map the existing academic and grey literature regarding the integration of aquatic foods (AF) into school food environments (SFE) across the Pacific region to better understand the scope, nature, and extent of documented evidence and identify gaps in the knowledge base. Introduction: Optimal nutrition during the first 8000 days is crucial for cognitive and physical development. Aquatic Foods hold a significant place in the Pacific Small Island Developing States (P-SIDS) due to their high nutritional value and cultural relevance. Amid the increasing rates of malnutrition in the region and increased interest in SFE, understanding the extent to which AF are incorporated in and around schools is crucial to inform strategy development and guide policy reform to support improved health outcomes for school-aged children and their families. Inclusion Criteria: The study will include documents focussing on the P-SIDS, exploring how AF are considered within the SFE. It covers aspects of the physical, economic, sociocultural, and political environment that influence food availability and choices in schools, excluding animal studies or those outside these settings. Methods: The scoping study will combine a systematic literature review with qualitative key informant interviews. Searches will be conducted in May 2024 using the databases Scopus, PubMed, CABI, Overton and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, supplemented by grey literature from government and NGO websites, with no restrictions on publication year to capture the most relevant data. This approach will also involve stakeholder consultations to enrich the data and provide a comprehensive understanding of the use and perception of AF in and around schools.
