Objective: This scoping review aims to assess the extent and quality of evidence on the health impacts of avocado consumption, specifically focusing on the optimal amounts and frequency that maximise health benefits without contributing to weight gain.
Introduction: Nutrient-rich avocados have attracted considerable attention due to their potential health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health and enhanced overall dietary intake. Despite these benefits, there is no clear consensus on the optimal quantity and frequency of avocado consumption that maximises these outcomes, underscoring the need for a structured review of the evidence.
Inclusion criteria: This review will include studies involving adults over 18 years old, focusing on the health outcomes of avocado consumption. The scope covers peer-reviewed articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and reports published in English from 1990 to 2024. Exclusions will apply to studies focusing solely on avocado extracts, oils, or other non-whole fruit products and those not reporting health outcomes.
Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in July 2024 across several databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search aimed to capture both published and unpublished studies, using a combination of keywords related to avocado and health impacts. Study selection and data extraction will be managed using Covidence, with findings to be presented in tabular and graphical forms via Microsoft Excel. A narrative summary will contextualise the findings according to the review's objectives.
