Abstract
Background: Since colonisation, Australian First Nations people have experienced rapid and forced changes that have negatively impacted their traditional lifestyles. These changes have resulted in multiple inequities, such as food insecurity and poor health outcomes in comparison to non-indigenous Australians. To date, no known attempt has been made to decolonise and culturally map the traditional diet and foodways of the Kabi Kabi People, who are one of the hundreds of Aboriginal tribes in Australia.
Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to develop an understanding of the traditional diet and foodways of the Kabi Kabi People by examining key themes, such as cultural practices, and nutritional characteristics, whilst also providing an overview of the extent and types of research and literature.
Methods: This scoping review will be conducted according to the Johanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews 2024. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist will be followed. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar and relevant grey literature sources will be conducted in November 2024. Citations and references from relevant sources will be reviewed to identify additional outputs. The selected literature will then be thematically analysed according to key objectives.
Outcomes: The primary objectives of this scoping review are to develop an understanding of the traditional diet, foodways, cultural practices, influencing factors and nutritional characteristics of the Kabi Kabi People. It is anticipated that the findings will inform further research into traditional diets of First Nations Peoples across Australia and contribute to cultural revitalisation efforts.
