Abstract
Background.
Medical doctors are uniquely placed to advance medical research, yet there is persistent evidence that most physicians struggle to prioritise research, even when it is an explicit expectation of their role. Understanding the factors that influence both participation in research, and improvements in research quality and quantity benefits individual investigators, the organisations they work for, and ultimately society as a whole through further advancement of medical treatments and outcomes.
Objective.
The present study undertakes a scoping review of literature that examines medical doctors’ research activities to determine the extent of current literature, methodologies utilised, and to summarise themes of current publications and any research gaps.Design. Online databases were used to identify English-language, peer-reviewed articles published between 2012-2021.
