Determinants of food choice in athletes: a scoping review protocol

Abstract
This registration is for a scoping review protocol on determinants of food choice of athletes. The details are outlined below.
Objective: The objective of the scoping review is to map the available evidence on determinants of food choice in athletes and describe outcomes that impact on dietary intake.
Introduction: The individual determinants of food choice have been extensively investigated in the general population, but there have been limited studies in athletes. Understanding food choice can help to understand enablers and barriers to optimal intake for athletes’ health and performance. A scoping review will provide an understanding of the sports and settings that have been investigated, the methods and approaches to assessing food choice, and the relationship to dietary intake. This has not been conducted to date.
Inclusion criteria: This review will consider studies that include athletes 16 years and over from any country who engage in physical activity with the intent to be competitive. Studies will be considered if they report determinants of food choice as either a primary or secondary outcome. All study designs will be considered.
Methods: This review will follow the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA -ScR). Ten databases will be searched. Early view abstracts of relevant nutrition plus sport and exercise science journals will also be scanned. Outcomes may be presented in peer review journals, published conference abstracts/ proceedings and research theses. No date limits will be set. After screening titles and abstracts, relevant studies will be retrieved in full by two researchers. Results will be confirmed by an additional two researchers. Data extraction will be presented in a table developed by the researchers with accompanying narrative summary and interpretation.
