Abstract
Background: Breastfeeding positively affects the health and well-being of the mother and has significant long-term health and wellbeing implications for the child (World Health Organisation, 2023), however, due to unique challenges associated with adolescent mothers, they are the least likely population to breastfeed (Pinho-Pompeu et al., 2023).
Aim: The aim of this scoping review is to investigate which program characteristics influence adolescent breastfeeding initiation and map what determinants are addressed by these factors in context of the socio-ecological model.
Methods: This scoping review will be conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology for scoping reviews 2020 edition (Aromataris & Munn 2020). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist (Page et al., 2021) will be followed. Inclusion criteria includes programs with the intention to support breastfeeding initiation and/or duration for pregnant adolescents (school age 12-19 years) living in high or upper middle-income countries as defined by the New World Bank country: Search strategy includes original research papers, peer reviewed journal articles and grey literature including thesis, dissertations and government and NGO reports.
Conclusion: The primary purpose of this scoping review is to identify and map the characteristics of programs which aim to support adolescent breastfeeding initiation and duration and to identify which socio-ecological determinants are addressed in the program. It is anticipated that this scoping review will inform program development and identify research gaps.
