Abstract
This thesis examines the transgressive formation of identity in the literature of female writers in Indonesia who subvert conventional understandings of femininity, female sexuality and the female role. Extant cultural, political and religious forces demarcate an expected societal and familial function for women in relation to men, and the portrayal of women in the literary canon reinforces this gender disparity. Recently, a growing number of writers have published works that challenge normative ideals surrounding the social and literary representation of women, and undermine neo-colonial notions of male superiority and female acquiescence. The thesis uses this contextual frame of information as the basis of inquiry into the localised effect of national trends locally and the response of young writers who express their alternative notions of self and identity through their writing and personal values. Exploration of literary transgression in national and local dimensions ultimately reveals postcolonialist values within texts that constitute a response to the gendered colonialism of the establishment.
