Abstract
There is variation in the food healthiness perceptions of nutrition professionals and explanations of variance to-date, has focused on foods’ nutrient content. However, literature suggests non-nutrient factors (i.e., food name, additives) also influence perceptions. The aim of this research is to investigate Australian dietitians’ perceptions of the healthiness of packaged foods; specifically, their self-reported influences on their rating of healthiness.
The study design was an observational cross-section survey recruiting a convenience sample of Australian Accredited Practicing Dietitians via the Dietitian’s Association of Australia national e-newsletter. Developed specifically for this study the survey contained four sections. Section A) Participants rated the healthiness (1- 10, less to more healthy) of seven packaged foods (bread, confectionary, breakfast cereal, flavoured yoghurt, curry, spread and crumble). Participants were provided with each foods’ generic name, ingredient list and nutrient information panel (NIP). Likert-scale and open-response questions examined influential factors related to each food in Section B. Section C) Explored specific factors influencing the healthiness of all packaged foods. Results of Section C were outside the present study’s scope and are reported separately. Section D) Collected demographic information.
