Abstract
Christine Keating (2014) suggests that the poetry of Margaret Attwood transforms an old mythical order into a new reality, a new myth by employing creative semiotics, archetype and symbols attributed to the transformative and oppositional characteristics of the mythic character, the Great Goddess of Life, Death and Regeneration. It is a “poetic of metamorphosis” because “myth both recounts and facilitates the process of metamorphosis, turning whatever is local in the imagination into what is universal” (Gorjup in Keating, 2014). Atwood’s attention to the poetic interplay between binary forces such as male/female, creation/destruction and victimizer/victim in classical myth narratives encourages a process of feminist revisionism. Adrienne Rich provides contemporary currency to a reappraisal of Atwood’s poetry and approach when she states, “revision - the act of looking back of seeing with fresh eyes, of entering an old text from a new critical direction is for women more than a chapter in cultural history; it is an act of survival.” (Rich in Beyer, 2000). Bitch on Heat is a fifty minute lip-synched performance work devised by Leah Shelton and directed by Ursula Martinez which draws on feminist revisionist mythologies, contemporary sexual politics and pop culture discourse for its performance content and approach to structure.
