Abstract
Longitudinal qualitative research uses repeated qualitative data collection to understand changes over time. By engaging participants in multiple rounds of data collection, research using this method goes beyond static snapshots—it offers a rich and nuanced understanding of how individuals, groups, and organisations evolve over time. Common qualitative data collection methods in longitudinal qualitative research include in-depth interviews, observations, diaries, document analysis, and online artefacts, to explore shifts in attitudes, understanding, behaviours, and contexts. Other methods of data collection such as photo elicitation and cultural probes can be used to augment this approach. The strength of a longitudinal qualitative research design is that it emphasises the value of examining phenomena within their temporal context and capturing the complexity of ongoing processes while revealing the mechanisms underlying change, including the influence of the past. The rich and detailed data set generated means that it is sufficiently flexible for answering a wide range of business and management questions. However, longitudinal qualitative research also has drawbacks, including long research time frames, participant attrition, and the commitment involved. This guide outlines the benefits and challenges of longitudinal studies in qualitative research and key considerations associated with adopting this approach.
