Abstract
This report examines South Africa’s news media ecosystem taking an ‘outside-in’ approach. The report asks: what can South Africa learn from other national news media systems in terms of how journalism is provided to people, and, in particular, how both news-making and news distribution is paid for? What, in other words, can be usefully drawn from global thinking about the economics of journalism that could be applied to or adapted for South Africa?
