Office for Learning and Teaching, Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education
2016
Abstract
This proposal addresses a national concern: the gap which education employers identify regarding the knowledge, skills and understandings of aspiring school leaders for promotion into increasingly demanding leadership roles. This study interrogates the suitability of current educational leadership programs, particularly in regional universities, where the needs of local principals are different and more complex. Data collection includes interviews and focus-group discussions with students who are also practising school leaders, and a reference group of School Principals. Findings aim to deliver the PIVOTAL Leadership Model and accompanying set of guidelines impacting on quality of leadership courses at the University of the Sunshine Coast and extending to regional universities such as Charles Darwin University and the University of Southern Queensland. Expected outcomes include: more relevant courses for leaders of learning communities based on practitioner-based research; and future partnerships with other universities, employer groups and professional associations towards sustainable and innovative leadership programs within a rapidly-changing learning landscape.
