Abstract
Attracting high quality teachers to regional, rural and remote (RRR) locations has been a longstanding priority for school communities in Australia. In Queensland in particular, this is the case in Far North Queensland (FNQ). One initiative, facilitated by the Kelvin Grove Teacher Enhancement Centre (KGTECe), has forged strong partnerships with higher education providers and school leaders in FNQ to optimise and support preservice teachers’ opportunities to experience being a teacher in that region. The purpose of KGTECe is to provide and enhance teacher preparation for high potential teacher education students in their final year of study. KGTECe facilitates a ‘real world work readiness’ program for preservice teachers over a 12-month period. The program incorporates targeted and practical professional development that is facilitated by practising lead teachers. The program, alongside a RRR placement opportunity, prepares preservice teachers for employment in RRR (and high priority) state schools upon graduation. The goal of the KGTECe initiative is to provide high potential and well-prepared preservice teachers to partnering state schools and regions.
