Abstract

Tourism
Research Background At the request of the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, the University of the Sunshine Coast developed these strategic guidelines to suggest how Battambang’s heritage assets may best be managed to develop sustainable heritage tourism to diversify and benefit the local poor community. The USC research team of 17 students and 2 staff (funded through the New Colombo Plan) provided the professional guidance and was supported by 17 tourism students from the University of Battambang. Research Contribution As the first ever in-depth documentation, the 98 page Strategic Guidelines identifies and provides actions to invigorate and protect Battambang’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage and environmental assets. The guidelines provide a holistic presentation of the existing and potential tourism products that are inter-related, geographically and conceptually to the French colonial heritage; for example: * environmental heritage assets including the Tonle Sap * historical heritage assets including those stemming from the Angkorian and Khmer Rouge eras * cultural heritage assets including religious structures and agricultural land-use and associated livelihood and lifestyle practices * emerging contemporary assets found in the arts, crafts and cooking. The Provincial and Cambodian Governments used the Strategic Guidelines to support their nomination of Battambang for UNESCO World Heritage Historic Urban Landscape – Urban Heritage listing. Research Significance These Strategic Guidelines provide a rationale and guidance for the protection and preservation of Battambang’s heritage for the enjoyment of all Khmer people and a process to develop and realise sustainable tourism for increasing numbers of international tourists. The Guidelines provide a basis for development within the mandatory requirements and criteria for accreditation and certification in the unified approach to standards of performance embraced by the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan 2016-25.
