Profile of Sunshine Coast Food and Agribusiness: 2021/2022 Update
University of the Sunshine Coast
2022
Abstract
This report is the sixth update in the Building the Links (2015) project profiling the Sunshine Coast food and agribusiness sector for the Sunshine Coast Council.
This report estimates the total value of food and agribusiness on the Sunshine Coast to be $925.22 million, comprised of an estimated value for agricultural production of $265.22 million and an estimated value of the processing sector of $660 million. Overall, this represents an increase in total value since the 2021 update of 16.2%, with an increase of 5% in agribusiness production and an increase of 21.3% in the processing sector. The increase in production goes against the decline seen in previous years, while the increase in the processing sector continues from the previous reporting period. As per previous reports, agricultural production estimates are based on ABS figures for 2019-20, while processing sector estimates are based on companies’ self-reported turnover for the previous year (so in this reporting period 2021).
The value increase of the Sunshine Coast’s agricultural production was led by increases in the two major agricultural commodities, wild-caught seafood and poultry slaughtering. In contrast, strawberries, macadamias, and dairy milk all suffered substantial declines. It should be noted that this reporting period does not reflect the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of which should be more fully represented in subsequent updates of the report.
Processors reported mixed results regarding turnover. The effects of the pandemic were clear with those heavily reliant on exports reporting significant drops while those with strong domestic market presence reported substantial increases. Overall, most processors reported similar or slightly lower profit margins over the current reporting period.
