Natural asset values: conservation and ecosystem integrity
University of the Sunshine Coast
2022
Abstract
The natural environment is a defining feature of the Sunshine Coast Region. The Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Strategy 2017 identifies the need for sustainable economic growth that maintains the Region’s natural assets and distinctive landscapes.
To better inform complex decisions and evaluate trade-offs involving environmental and economic policy choices, the Strategy identifies the need for a more holistic understanding of the role of our natural assets and the ecosystem services they provide to our economy and wellbeing. The Sunshine Coast Council partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in a three-year research partnership project—Valuing the Sunshine Coast’s Natural Assets—to deliver this analysis. The project is informed by Council’s Environment and Liveability Strategy, Regional Economic Development Strategy, and Community Strategy as well as by planning documents and strategies at local and state levels.
