Abstract

The Nambour Community Safety Review was instigated to support the Special Entertainment Precinct in the Nambour central business district – involving plans to widen employment and community engagement opportunities through the expansion of live music venues and associated night-time entertainment. Development of entertainment zones of this type have the potential to provide numerous benefits but also present a variety of crime-related risks. Consequently, it was decided that precinct planning could be assisted through a review of relevant safety issues, focused on the implications for crime prevention. With this in mind, four studies were conducted, constituting chapters 1 to 4 of this report: 1. a review of the scientific literature regarding best practices in the management of crime risks in entertainment precincts, public places and town centres, 2. development of a crime and safety profile for Nambour using police recorded crime statistics, 3. a CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) audit, and 4. a review of crime and safety as a community issue in local news media.
