Abstract

Studies show that the management of deteriorating patients is poor and, when left untreated, this leads to expensive and often unsuccessful resuscitation procedures. In addition, it is acknowledged that non-metropolitan settings in Australia have fewer resources for managing deteriorating patients10,11 and that communication and referral processes are less well established with demands on enrolled and registered nurses to take leadership roles. However, there has been a lack of knowledge about the educational needs, decision-making strategies and clinical practices of students to enhance their future practice and leadership roles.
