Abstract

Approximately 2.5% of the Australian population are veterans of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and around 6000 join their ranks each year. Government focus in recent years has seen a series of initiatives implemented to assist veterans’ transition, particularly to address the challenges of attaining civilian employment following their service with the ADF. This research project explored the challenges veterans face during their transition to new employment by delving into the stories of thirty-one veterans who had left military service and had been successful in securing employment. The research team also interviewed representatives from five organisations that have been recognised for their excellence in veterans’ employment. The findings of the research identified a series of barriers and enablers of veterans’ transition that involved three central themes. These were related to the job seeking process, the organisation for which the veteran worked, and the individual veteran’s characteristics and circumstances.
