Abstract

macadamia fruit set
The 1990-92 project aimed to pinpoint factors that contribute to low yields in macadamias grown in Australia. The basic premise was that when compared with productivity of the same varieties in Hawaii, Australian plantings on average fare poorly. The research spanned two years and covered crop development and tree performance from preflowering to nut maturity. Supplementary cross pollination and carbohydrate availability were found to be the major factors limiting productivity. Alterations in orchard design and management as well as breeding and selection of new varieties were recommended. This project was funded by voluntary contributions from industry with matched funding from the Australian Government facilitated through HAL.
