Abstract
STUDY AIMS: The aims of the study were to 1. Revise and implement perioperative fasting guidelines at RCH to ensure consistency with international evidence based practice guidelines and to reflect best practice. 2. Reduce the mean fasting period to less than 8 hours for children admitted to RCH for a day procedure under general anaesthetic. 3. Identify children who may be at particular risk of perioperative fasting induced hypoglycaemic episodes and to implement a protocol of care management to reduce this identified risk.
