Abstract

economic feasibility wildlife sanctuary Orokonui establishment costs operating costs
Resource Monitor Trust has commissioned this report to appraise the economic feasibility of the establishment of a wildlife sanctuary on a 250 hectare site of Department of Conservation administered land at Orokonui, approximately 30 km from the centre of Dunedin City. This proposal was raised in the 1980s by the Otago Natural History Trust but did not proceed because of funding difficulties. A report by Wildlife Consultants Ltd (Allen, 2001) identified five potential sites for a wildlife sanctuary in close proximity to Dunedin but concluded that the Orokonui Conservation Area was preferred for a number of reasons, most especially the relative ease with which the area could be surrounded by a predator-proof fence. Consequently, this report focuses on the Orokonui site.
