Abstract

Marketing Canarium indicum
This project aimed to identify and develop market led opportunities to improve and build the capacity of the canarium nut industries. Canarium indicum is an indigenous timber tree that grows throughout the south Pacific and produces edible nuts. The processed canarium nut industry is in its infancy in Pacific Island countries and has great potential to improve livelihoods. Research background Using market segmentation, consumer behaviour and branding theory, this project identified potential domestic and export marketing opportunities for canarium nuts in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea (PNG). In Vanuatu, there is evidence of unfulfilled domestic demand, and significant potential to tap into the increasing tourist market coming by air and ship. In the Solomon Islands, there are more market opportunities in the domestic food service, hotel trade and retail sectors. In PNG, there is potential to maximise the domestic market with a view to canarium developing as an important export market crop. Research objectives were to a) identify and develop markets by understanding consumer preferences, b) develop processing techniques that are targeted to these specific consumer needs and the specific capabilities of each country’s supply chains, and c) understand the drivers and barriers to stakeholder industry participation and to attend to these emerging obstacles to further industry development and capacity. Research contribution The major achievements of this project directly linked to my marketing research in this project included a) identification of different market segments, consumer preferences and product development opportunities, b) the commercial appeal of canarium nuts in the Australian market, c) identification of export market opportunities, and d) a canarium nut marketing strategy for the direct business-to-consumer market. Research significance This three-year project was funded by the Australian Government’s Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research ($1.12m, Cat 1). This project resulted in substantial growth of the canarium nut industry in Vanuatu—from one processor to five processors and value adders, with one processor increasing the volume from 18kg to 1 tonne. At project completion, PNG had commenced commercial sales of processed Canarium nuts in formal markets in East New Britain.
