CoastSnapQLD: December 2018 report
2018
Abstract
The “CoastSnap” initiative consists of beach monitoring photo-point fixtures that allow citizen scientists to obtain routine monitoring images of beaches with their mobile devices. These crowd-sourced photos are then supplied by the community back to researchers and managers via the digital media platforms Instagram, Twitter and Facebook (Splinter et al., 2018). This novel application of smartphones as beach monitoring tools was initiated by Dr Mitchell Harley (Water Research Laboratory, UNSW Sydney) and supported by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and Northern Beaches Council (http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/research-and-publications/your-research/citizen-science/digital-projects/coastsnap).
