Abstract
This is a brief research report based on a baseline study conducted in June to July 2024 on the impact of climate change on the Maisin communities living in Collingwood Bay, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. The aim of this baseline study was to assess the environmental impacts on these communities. The goal was to create local awareness and stimulate discussions about climate change and possible actions, at the same time providing the Provincial and National Government with a report on the climate change hazards that are threatening Maisin communities and culture. We hope this report will lead to an endeavour to assist the affected communities in Collingwood Bay. As we will show in our report, Maisin communities have been severely affected by a series of complex and compound climatological events starting in 2006. In this report, we describe these series of events, at the same time highlighting how they are impacting Maisin communities today and will continue to negatively impact Maisin people for the foreseeable future. As other vulnerable communities across the world, Maisin people living in Collingwood Bay face disproportionately severe impacts from climate change due to limited resources, lack of infrastructure, and lack of access to services. Climate change exacerbates these vulnerabilities through extreme weather events that cause loss of housing and gardens, food and water insecurity, and significant health impacts, especially for women, children and the elderly. Our report highlights the urgent need for climate adaptation strategies that prioritise social equity and community-based approaches.
