Abstract
The Acting for Health with Children project examined strategies for engaging children as simulated patients (SPs) in nursing and midwifery education. Despite persistent calls for the involvement of children in the development of nursing curricular (Randall & Hall 2011), a gap exists in both research and practice of health simulation with child performers. The Acting for Health with Children project initiated an 'action research' project (Schön 1995) to expand USC's research in this field and make a significant impact on higher education beyond our own cohorts into national and international contexts. USC Drama students and a local high school drama teacher were paired with child performers to create fictional family groups. Family scenarios were developed for simulation events that facilitated learning of 'soft skills' including communication and critical thinking. The scope of the project included the recruitment and training of SPs; simulation events and feedback and reflection processes. Acting for Health with Children recognises a growing demand in the sector to promote children's participation in nursing interventions (Randall & Hill 2011) and is at the forefront of this research.
