Abstract

According to the 2021 Census, 581,139 individuals have served or are currently serving in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) (Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 2021). Ensuring military veterans make a successful transition to civilian life is a concern for many; the Australian Defence Force (ADF), policy makers, organisations, communities, veterans, and their families. This report presents the findings of a systematic review of current research relating to veteran employment. Four of the most widely used databases of peer reviewed articles internationally were systematically searched, as well as research from trusted industry sources. To recognise advancements in approaches to veteran transition, only research published between January 2010 and May 2022 was considered. In addition, the scope of the review was limited to those conducted in the Five Eyes countries (USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia) to ensure the research is appropriate for consideration in an Australian context. However, even between these countries, differences do exist between these countries in terms of their populations and Defence service models. After appropriate filtering, 118 journal articles and 19 reports relating to veteran employment were analysed.
