Abstract
Teenage and young mothers often experience a range of challenges throughout their pregnancy and raising their child. A large literature base has documented the increased risk of depression, socio-economic disadvantage, stigmatising experiences and isolation from their friends, family, and healthcare workers, amongst other negative outcomes. Historically, research has focused on these negative outcomes for young mothers as well as for their children. While high rates of psychological distress are critical to note and address, there is little research on the rates of positive psychological wellbeing in young mothers and strategies to facilitate such outcomes. A well-rounded approach to understanding the psychological health of young mums is to consider both mental ill-health and mental wellbeing; a common approach in contemporary wellbeing models. This project applied a holistic approach and explored resilience and flourishing in young mothers, while also measuring distress.
