Abstract
Numerous children in Queensland's public education system have fled the destruction of homes and communities from war outside Australia's borders. Ironically, their plight represents the evils of the "outside" world. This presentation addresses how educational institutions consider and speak to issues of identity and citizenship. Paper presented at the Public Lecture at Salve Regina University, Newport Beach, Rhode Island, 6 April 2005.
