ChatGPT vs engineering assessment
The Teaching and Learning Laboratory, University of Melbourne [Seminar Event] (Online, 28-Jun-2023)
2023
Abstract
Join Dr Sasha Nikolic, Dr Sarah Grundy and Dr Rezwanul Haque to explore how ChatGPT responded to a range of engineering assessments from 10 subjects across 7 Australian universities for an Australasian Association for Engineering Education Seminar.
ChatGPT sent shockwaves through many sectors once reports filtered through that it could pass exams. In higher education, it has raised many questions about the authenticity of assessment and challenges in detecting plagiarism. Amongst the resulting frenetic hubbub, hints of potential opportunities in how ChatGPT could support learning and the development of critical thinking have also emerged.
In this presentation, we examine how ChatGPT may affect different assessment types by exploring ChatGPT responses to existing assessment prompts from ten engineering-related subjects (including math and physics) across seven Australian universities. We explore the strengths and weaknesses of current assessment practice and discuss opportunities on how ChatGPT can be used to facilitate learning.
The presentation covers the following assessment types: Online Quizzes, Numerical (Assignments and Exams), Code Submission, Oral, Visual, Written (Experimentation-based), Written (Project-based), Written (Reflective & Critical Thinking-based), Written (Research-based).
This work is based on the recently published article by the presenters – ‘ChatGPT versus engineering education assessment: a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional benchmarking and analysis of this generative artificial intelligence tool to investigate assessment integrity’ available open access at https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/03043797.2023.2213169.
This seminar was run by the University of Melbourne Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology's Teaching and Learning Laboratory for the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE). The seminar was given by members of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education's Early Career Engineering Educators Academy.
