Abstract
Bestselling Bleeders: Australian novels that successfully bleed between Y.A. and Adult age classifications
The commercial success of Young Adult (Y. A.) fiction franchises such as Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Divergent has seen industry stakeholders covet novels that have the potential to successfully transition to film and merchandising franchises. This focus can influence the way in which Y.A. fictions are procured and published with market segmentation strategies, for example, the alignment of book cover design, synopsis and blurb content, and age/genre classifications. In recent years, industry has steered Y.A. fiction trends to include vampire and fantasy inspired fictions, novels related to illness, dystopian prose and socio-political novels.
Fiction franchises predominantly emanate from the U.S.A., and while the Australian Y.A. industry is susceptible to these same practices, the current market is proving flexible and uniquely placed to consider and publish fiction from a diverse range of genres, themes, and styles. This may account for the international bestselling success of some recent Australian fictions that are concurrently shelved and distributed as Adult and/or Y.A. fiction (works which are nominally termed ‘Bleeders’).
This presentation examines the unique features of the Australian Y.A. fiction industry that are conducive to, rather than restrictive of, wider publication opportunities for authors of Y.A. fiction. The issues discussed are relevant to those who contribute to and comment on Y.A. fiction but are also increasingly pertinent to those who consume Young Adult fiction.
