Abstract
In this region of the Sunshine Coast – the word “Maroochy” is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘Black Swan’ and it is believed the name has derived from its red bill. In Australia, in 1697, Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh discovered the Black Swan, (which had never been seen before – only white swans were thought to be in existence) while sailing down a river in Western Australia calling the river Swarte Swaen-Revier - The Swan River. The connection being for this nomination – is that there are many white swans and there always has been (This represents the mainstream Australian white nurses and midwives), but very few Black Swans (This represents rare Australian Indigenous nurses and midwives). We are “Black Swans” we are highly dedicated to ‘Closing the Gap’ we are a rare and unique Indigenous health workforce.
