Abstract

Nursing
In August 2018, The Sapphires team members - Leone Smith, Lynne Stuart and Bronwyn Doyle from USC's School of Nursing and Midwifery & Paramedicine were awarded a USC Vice-Chancellor & President's Diversity and Inclusion Award, under the nominated categories of (1) Reconciliation, and (2) Inclusion. The USC Reconciliation Award, recognises Initiatives and professional activities to achieve the vision and goals set out in the University of the Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Action Plan 2017-2019. The award The Sapphires team members received was in recognition of the work undertaken to coordinate and grow the Well Persons Health Check Day (WPHCD) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the Sippy Downs campus. The Well Persons Health Check Day (WPHCD) initiated and run by North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health (NCACCH) is an annual event held at alternative venues either on the Sunshine Coast or Gympie. In 2018 the WPHCD was held on the USC Sippy Downs campus on Gubbi Gubbi/ Kabi Kabi land with just over 1000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people attending. Members of USC's Nursing and Midwifery team have participated in the WPHCD for four x consecutive years, from 2015 - 2018. The aim of USC's participation in the NCACCH WPHCD is to promote - 'Reconciliation in Action' - through building strong respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities - by promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and cultural safety excellence, and to provide pathways to future career opportunities. This approach aligns with supporting the vision and goals of the USC RAP in regard to: the Relationships, Respect and Opportunities primary focus areas of the USC - "University of the Sunshine Coast Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2017 - 2019".
