Abstract

Higher education plays a central role in shaping the knowledge, values and future directions of society. Yet, in Australia, universities continue to privilege Western knowledge traditions often at the expense of the rich living knowledge systems of First Nations peoples and the diverse cultural insights brought by migrant, refugee and culturally diverse communities. This narrow exclusionary approach limits the breadth and relevance of Australia’s research and teaching, reinforcing systemic inequities in whose knowledge is recognised, valued, and legitimised. If Australian society is to achieve true knowledge justice, Australian higher education must move beyond token inclusion to actively decolonise and reimagine its programs, research practices, and institutions. This imperative has been at the heart of Professor Catherine Manathunga’s research for over three decades, guiding a body of work that calls for transformative change in how knowledge is produced, taught, and shared across Australian and global contexts.
