I know that timber decays, so why do we talk about timber durability?

Abstract
Wood is a biological material, and like all such materials, it will eventually degrade. However, not every timber degrades at the same rate, and we can use some timbers in very rigorous conditions for many years. A bit of background about timber will help to better understand how it can best be used for maximum service life.
