Research Background Portraiture since the Renaissance has been concerned with portraying the outer appearance and inner psychology of the subject. Photographic portraiture has also sought to capture the essence of the sitter, yet while often idealising the subject. This portfolio considers how photographic portraiture can be employed to reveal underlying characteristics and a more nuanced representation of the sitter. The portfolio draws on contemporary art practice and studio photography to present a broad selection of subjects situated in environments that further illuminate aspects of their lives. Research Contribution The suite of portraits investigates themes of identity and connection, through personal relationships or individual experience. The portfolio contributes to contemporary photographic portraiture through its capacity to generate unsettling interpretations revealing vulnerabilities, the underlying humanity and complex inner lives of the subjects. Research Significance The significance of this interrelated work is evidenced by the following: Individual works were selected as finalist and semi-finalist in the international HeadOn Photographic Portrait Awards, Sydney; published in the international book Exposure, New York and published online and in international art journals: iArtists and Poets and Artists.
