Creative Works Portfolio: Commercial music production and transnational flow

Abstract
Background: The information age has brought with it an augmenting and fractious understanding of boarders and their relationship to national notions of commercial and cultural flow (Bathelt et al, 2018). In the global music economy, working across national boundaries has become mainstay with prominent pop artists recording in multiple locations and creative ecosystems. Problematically, this work is often limited to collaboration between known agents with specific commercial models in mind which results in product cohesion in only one market geography. This transnational-flow has clearly identified creative potential in this framework, but little is written about what happens to transnational flow when the collaborating parties don’t occupy the same cultural space and have not ever met?
Contribution: This project explores a unique transnational approach. Having never met any project stakeholders nor spoken to the collaborative artist, this project came to international release through Facebook messenger as primary collaborative communication platform. This text only based approach informed the project’s cultural and musical needs navigating limitation in language and cultural knowledge. Through sharing of narratives and cultural events common between Australia and Poland, Andy Ward wrote, recorded and produced each work highlighting the transnational connection between the two artists. The project applied transnational narrative flow through multiple iterations of lyrical translation resulting in a shared story, speaking to diverse cultures and geographies.
Significance: This work was commissioned and internationally released by Warner Music Poland as part of a major album project. The works have over 3 million streams over various platforms since its 2021 release. This album was featured as album of the week in major Polish radio stations, multiple industry reviews, and received high rotation play across various European broadcasters both radio and TV.
