Abstract

Crop and Pasture Production Plant Biology Microbiology Australia banana industry pest management disease management product quality Biosecurity Queensland
The Australian banana industry today is largely free of the many serious pests and diseases of banana which are present in overseas countries. Australia's strong plant health status ensures that banana growers enjoy lower production costs, especially when it comes to the management of pests and diseases, and quality of product. The Australian banana industry is worth $327 million per year, all of which could be threatened if certain pests and diseases become established in Australian production areas. Biosecurity Queensland is the recently formed business group within the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) whose purpose is to help protect Queensland's primary industries and environment from emergency pests and diseases.
