Melioidosis AMR prediction AMR Comparative genomics Burkholderia pseudomallei Antimicrobial resistance Bioinformatics
We read with great interest the recently published study by Hinwan and colleagues in Infection, Genetics and Evolution (Hinwan et al., 2025). Their study reports valuable data for 16 Thai Burkholderia pseudomallei genomes – 13 of which are publicly available – that exhibit antimicrobial resistance (AMR) towards at least one clinically relevant antibiotic: amoxicillin/clavulanate (AMC), ceftazidime (CAZ), meropenem (MEM), or co-trimoxazole (SXT). Their study also examined 22 previously published AMR strains from Australia (n = 21) and Thailand (n = 1). The genomes of these 38 AMR strains were compared with 300 antimicrobial-susceptible strains to help elucidate known and putative novel AMR genetic variants. Although we appreciate their study design, we believe that certain results merit further consideration and analysis.
